Winnie Harlow is a 22-year-old Canadian who has the condition Vitiligo. Vitiligo is a condition that causes white patches to develop on the skin due to a lack of pigment in the skin. Winnie was diagnosed with Vitiligo at the age of four years old. Throughout her childhood, Winnie suffered bullying due to her condition which resulted in her changing schools on a number of occasions. According to the Daily Mail, it wasn’t until a Canadian journalist saw Winnie’s Facebook page and told her she was “strikingly beautiful” that Winnie thought about modelling.
After speaking publically about her condition Winnie realised that she could use her Vitiligo as an asset and eventually decided to pluck up the courage to approach an agency. However, she soon found that they dismissed her dream and instead told her to focus on becoming a makeup artist. Winnie said “It was an indirect hit aimed at my skin” Despite this, a casting director from the TV show America’s Next Top Model got in touch with Winnie and before she knew it she was on the show.
After finishing sixth place on the show Winnie found many world renowned photographers wanted to work with her. Since then Winnie has gone on to feature in various campaigns including modelling for Spanish clothing brand Desigual, Italian clothing brand Diesel and appearing in multiple magazines including Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Complex. Winnie has also worked with Sprite, Swarovski and even Beyonce. Since Winnie began her modelling career she has received positive feedback on social media which has spurred her on to carry on with her fantastic career.
